heya,
this week was busy busy. moving in, working with the kids, trying to get the routine together...all of these things were a little taxing on lissa lis.
on wednesday, the chamber of commerce organized a trip of richmond's industrial areas for our crew. the tour hit up all the hot spots - chevron, light industry, last remaining wetlands...and throughout, the director of the chamber praised how much chevron and the polluting, non-tax paying, cancer causing corporations have done for this city.
"richmond is SO lucky to have 1/3 of their tax base come from one company like chevron..."
"we should develop these last remaining marshlands...development = jobs, kids!"
the next day, richmond city council passed the ordinance to allow chevron to expand, taking even more of the coastline for nasty uses, that don't really benefit richmond at all. the hearing was held at kennedy hs, where i work, in order to allow for the many protesters to fit in the room.
next week, my students will attend the san pablo ave specific plan public hearing. the meeting is totally un-accessible by any means but car. we will take a bus.
here are pictures of the brighter side of things...we got to start our documentary film, and visited the ss red oak victory ship. it was really fun :)
off to the redwoods, to think and to cleanse...
xoxo
